Dear Colleagues,
International Institute of Migration and Development https://iimad.org/ in association with Kerala Economic Association is organising a Book Talk by Dr Divya Kannan, Department of History and Archaeology, Shiv Nadar University, NCR Delhi Contested Childhoods: Caste and Education in Colonial Kerala. Please use the google meet link below:
https://meet.google.com/uut-tvjx-gvm
Or open Meet and enter this code: uut-tvjx-gvm on 19th September 2024 (Thursday) 4.30 pm (IST).
You are requested to join the session and participate. You may also share among your colleagues and students.
About the book:
Contested Childhoods traces a complex history of caste, race, education, and Christian missions in colonial south India. It draws upon the vast Protestant Christian missionary archives of the London Missionary Society, the Church Missionary Society, and the Basel German Evangelical Missionary Society to showcase the processes of negotiation, tensions, and underlying violence in the encounters between European ‘outsiders’ and local populations on the question of education. It examines the interplay of caste and education in reshaping ideas and norms of modern childhood and lower-caste community building in the regions of Travancore, Cochin, and Malabar. Set against a comparative historical perspective, the book argues for a greater focus on subaltern histories, especially the meanings and practices associated with educating poor, lower-caste children within the confines of formal schooling and beyond.
About the author:
Divya Kannan is an historian of modern India and currently Assistant Professor, Department of History, Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida, NCR Delhi, India. She is also the co-founder of the Critical Childhoods and Youth Studies Collective (www.theccysc.com) which began online in April 2020. Her main areas of research, particularly with a focus on South Asia, include Histories of Childhood and Youth, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Empires and Colonial Violence, Histories of Education, Curriculum, and Pedagogy, Public and Oral Histories. Divya completed her MA, M.Phil and PhD from the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Theme of the Lecture
I. Background and Preliminaries: Economics is a multi-disciplinary subject. However, this fact is not generally recognised even by many of the faculty members and practitioners of the discipline. In addition, the distinction between micro and macro aspects of this knowledge area is also not much helpful. Since the fact that the subject is evolving and changing continuously, not only should the teachers keep abreast of the dynamics of the disciplinary domain but alert the students to get familiarised with up-to-date material as well. The tendency of text books to explain matters by saying that XYZ has said it needs to be understood with caution. Indeed, all this makes the curriculum discussion a challenging task and a difficult one too.
II. Logical arguments: demonstration and proof. What constitutes an argument?
III. Mathematical AND plain Geometrical arguments (notice And not versus)
IV. Decision Making Under Alternative Scenarios (traditional micro)
V. The matter of Time
VI. Competition: Perfect and Imperfect
VII. Two Examples
